Background:

1977 marked the founding of the legendary rock/reggae/new wave trio "The Police", a band that in 6 short years went from obscurity to super stardom and defined decade of music. For me, and many that were children of the 80's the Police were our Beatles. Each successive album and tour got bigger and better until Sting finally struck out on his own in the mid 1980's. For over 20 years, Andy, Sting, and Stewart stayed apart from each other much to the dismay of the band's adoring fans. It wasn't until 2007, that Sting called for an unprecedented return of The Police to mark the 30th anniversary of the band's founding. It was an epic reunion with fans worldwide thankful that the super trio had finally returned to the stage. Following that tour, 10 more years of silence from the band ensued with only various activities by the band members individually...

At the moment Sting is on tour promoting his new 57th & 9th album and headlining smaller venues much like The Police did as they were breaking in the U.S. and Europe. In honor of this release, and the 40th anniversary of the founding of The Police, we are releasing a resurrected cover of the lost/abandoned Police/Sting single "Don't You Believe Me Baby". This song was only recorded as a demo by Sting in 1981 and ultimately rejected from the "Ghost In The Machine" album. Please listen to that demo via this link here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNLtT...

In our humble opinion, and the opinion of many who have viewed the demo on YouTube, this song should have made the record. Some have said that this song was in fact the original prototype to the classic romantic single "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", but clearly the subject matter of the song makes this an "anti-ballad". Note that the lyrics to the song have been changed ever so slightly to accommodate a "21 century" Police single. Forgive us.

Please watch and decide whether or not Sting was right to leave it off the album, or if recording it would have made the "Ghost In The Machine" release even more stellar! Special thanks goes out to our facebook friend Henry Padovani (the original guitarist of The Police) for encouraging us to record and release this. In addition the drummer on this recording, Mike Levesque, simply did a masterful job of capturing the essence of Stewart Copeland. The original demo only had a drum machine! Thank you for watching and please spread the word!

lyrics

Original lyrics by Sting with modifications by M. Aroian

I reached our rendezvous at eight
Relieved to find I wasn't late
I saw you standing in the shadows

It's hard to tell what happened then
I took you in my arms again
I realized I'd kissed a stranger

Don't you believe me, baby
All that I've said to you is true
Don't you believe me, baby
It's just that she looked the same as you

Still I mistook her for a friend
She must have thought I’d lost my head
And I was covered in embarrassment

I made her see I was no punk
Just someone who was in a funk
And I was sorry for her harassment

Don't you believe me, baby
All that I've said to you is true
Don't you believe me, baby
It's just that she looked the same as you

With hope and power to move someone
Respective partners had not come
Such disappointment we both tasted

Nine o'clock had brought the rain
She walked away to catch her train
I said "Why should this night be wasted?"

Don't you believe me, baby
All that I've said to you is true
Don't you believe me, baby
It's just that she looked the same as you
Don't you believe me, baby
All that I've said to you is true
Don't you believe me, baby
It's just that she looked the same as you
Looked the same as you
Looked the same as youuuuuuu
(The same as you)

We had some dinner and drank some wine
And everything was going fine
'Til we showed up on a facebook feed

I didn't mind the broken arm
The blow has done no lasting harm
I need you here, won't you come back to me?

Don't you believe me, baby
All that I've said to you is true
Don't you believe me, baby
It's just that she looked the same as you

Don’t you believe me baby
All that I've said to you is true
